Spectrum Center Named Finalist For 2026 Sports Facility Of The Year

Recognition Highlights Impact of Recent $245M Transformation and Fan-First Design

Spectrum Center’s recent transformation is earning recognition on the national stage. The home of the Charlotte Hornets has been named a finalist for the Sports Business Journal’s 2026 Sports Facility of the Year award - one of the sports and entertainment industry’s highest honors. The Sports Facility of the Year award recognizes excellence in venue design, functionality and overall guest experience across both new construction projects and renovated arenas. Spectrum Center joins an elite group of nominees that includes Crypto.com Arena (Los Angeles), Lindner Family Tennis Center (Cincinnati), MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.), Petco Park (San Diego) and Progressive Field (Cleveland).

At the center of the recognition is a two-year, $245 million renovation that reimagined nearly every aspect of the building. Completed in October 2025 as the venue marked its 20th anniversary, the project transformed Spectrum Center into a modern, world-class arena. Upgrades spanned concourses, gathering spaces, premium areas and guest amenities, alongside major improvements to technology, infrastructure and sightlines – enhancing comfort, connectivity and overall functionality throughout the venue.

“Being nominated for Sports Facility of the Year is incredibly exciting,” said Donna Julian, Chief Venues Officer for Hornets Sports & Entertainment (HSE). “We set out to redefine the experience at Spectrum Center and create a world-class destination for our fans, partners and community. As a centerpiece of Uptown Charlotte, we’re proud of the role this building plays in bringing people together and delivering unforgettable moments night after night.”

Throughout the project, the organization had a clear priority: putting fans first. From the earliest planning stages, the renovation focused on accessibility, comfort and engagement at every level of the building. The result is a more seamless and inclusive experience, with new social gathering spaces, expanded premium offerings and upgraded hospitality areas designed to appeal to a wide range of guests.

Movement throughout the arena was also a major focus. Enhancements like a new Light Rail entrance and a dedicated VIP corridor – providing direct access to event-level premium clubs—have made it easier for fans to navigate the building while elevating the overall flow of events. Combined with new seating, broader path-of-travel improvements, enhanced food and beverage options, and significant technology upgrades, the changes have reshaped how guests experience games, concerts and live events from arrival to departure.

Beyond the arena itself, the impact of the renovation is being felt across Uptown Charlotte. The revitalized Spectrum Center has strengthened its role as a central hub for sports and entertainment in the city, drawing increased visitation, economic activity and national attention. With the ability to attract more high-profile events, major tours and expanded programming beyond basketball, the venue continues to elevate Charlotte’s profile as a destination.

Presented annually, the Sports Business Awards recognize organizations that demonstrate excellence in innovation, fan engagement and operational performance throughout the sports industry. Winners will be announced on May 20, 2026, at the Sports Business Awards ceremony at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City.
